Extraordinary memory techniques anyone can use

Christopher Miller came to demonstrate his password memorisation App and show us some techniques for memorising names and faces

First of all, we started with a quick video introduction with animated characters showing us how our imagination can help us remember things by linking what we want to remember with an associated image and then linking the images.

Then we went straight into a demonstration of the App, and the person in the room who claimed to have the worst memory was volunteered to be the guinea pig. She claimed that an 8-character random uppercase and lowercase alphanumeric password would be impossible to remember, so Christopher made her a 9-character one instead. Using pictures of people and things from the App, within about three minutes, she had memorised it and could recite it.

Moving on to names and faces, Christopher explained that there were several parts to the problem that everyone has. The first thing is to recognise more consciously what features in a face are useful for remembering someone. So we did exercises to notice, describe and identify useful features.

Then we started attaching associations to the names and attaching the name associations to the features. Everyone had three names to remember, but a surprising number of people memorised all nine examples straight away, so the system worked better than we expected.

You can check out Christopher's iPhone app "PasswordGear" on the Apple App store, or on his web site www.passwordgear.com Don't forget to Like his Facebook page, as well as follow him on Twitter.
